Governor Riley Enlists Citizens in Search for State Christmas Tree

Workers with the Alabama Department of Transportation deliver last year’s Christmas tree to the State Capitol.

MONTGOMERY – Governor Bob Riley is asking Alabamians for help in locating the state’s next Christmas tree.

This year’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the State Capitol is scheduled for December 7. The Governor is searching for someone who is willing to donate a tree for the occasion, preferably an eastern red cedar between 35 feet and 45 feet in height. Once found, tree specialists with the Alabama Department of Transportation will professionally cut the tree down and transport it to the State Capitol where it will be placed at the top of the steps off Dexter Avenue.

“Each year I’ve been governor, someone has donated a spectacular Alabama tree for this very special event. This year, we’re asking citizens to join us in the search because we haven’t found one yet,” Governor Riley said.

Anyone with a recommendation for a tree should contact the Governor’s Office at 334-242-7100.
