October 01, 2009 Governor Riley Comments on Other States Learning From Alabama MONTGOMERY - Governor Bob Riley commented on officials from other states gathering in Alabama this week to study acclaimed education programs that are offered in Alabamas schools. Education officials from North Carolina, Kansas, West Virginia and Louisiana are in Alabama this week to observe effective education programs being used in the state. Alabama has become a national leader in education thanks to the reforms weve made over the last few years. The fact that education leaders from other states are coming here to learn how Alabama is so successful is a testament to the value of these reforms. Theyre working to improve our schools and help our students achieve more than ever before. I hope our legislators realize that the investments were making in reforms like the Reading Initiative, AMSTI, ACCESS distance learning and First Class Pre-K must continue if Alabama is to remain a leader in educational progress. We may be going through some challenging budgetary times, but funding for these proven programs must be a priority. This isnt the first time other states have sent leaders to Alabama to learn about the states successful education initiatives. In September 2007, education leaders from 18 states joined Governor Riley in Huntsville for a conference that highlighted the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI). Governor Riley has continually pushed to increase investments in Alabama education initiatives that have gotten results and received national acclaim: the Alabama Reading Initiative; the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative; ACCESS distance learning; and First Class Pre-K. | |
