Constable Day, 2006 WHEREAS, the office of Constable was introduced into British Common Law following the Norman Conquest in 1066; and
WHEREAS, the Constable was the first law enforcement officer in the American Colonies; and WHEREAS, the office of Constable has performed varied duties in different places in accordance with the needs of the constituency served; and WHEREAS, the office of Constable is the most localized law enforcement agency in existence; and WHEREAS, the Constable system in Alabama operates at no cost to state or county governments: NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of the State of Alabama, do hereby proclaim January 28, 2006, as Constable Day in the State of Alabama and call upon all Alabamians on this special day and indeed throughout the year, to recall the long history of service constables have provided to their communities.
