Chris Famous Hot Dogs Day WHEREAS, Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs, a family owned restaurant since 1917 located at 138 Dexter Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama will celebrate their 90th Anniversary on May 1, 2007; and WHEREAS, Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs opened on May 1, 1917 and was the first to introduce Alabamians to what we now know as the hot dog; and WHEREAS, Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs was originally known as the Post Office Café & Fruit Stand on Dexter Avenue in Montgomery. Christopher Anastasios “Chris” Katechis (1896 - 1989), immigrated to the United States from Greece and came here to work for his uncle at the Café. He bought the business from his uncle in the 1930’s and renamed it Chris’ Hot Dog Stand, which is now operated by his son Theo; and WHEREAS, Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs serves 200-400 customers a day and 35,000 hot dogs and hamburgers a month; and WHEREAS, Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs has served millions of customers of all ages. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams and Tallulah Bankhead have enjoyed Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs; and WHEREAS, Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs largest takeout order was during the campaign rally for George Wallace in 1963 where 2,000 hot dogs were enjoyed; and WHEREAS, Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs is very generous in continually donating hot dogs to community and charitable events; and WHEREAS, Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs is the oldest continuous operating restaurant in Montgomery; and On May 1, 2007, Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs will celebrate 90 years of serving an American favorite – the hot dog: NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2007, as Chris Famous Hot Dogs Day in the State of Alabama and I urge all Alabamians to join Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs in celebrating 90 years by visiting Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs.
