National Radon Action Month
By the Governor of the State of Alabama
A Proclamation

December 04, 2007


WHEREAS, radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that may threaten the health of our citizens and their families; and

WHEREAS, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers; and

WHEREAS, any home located in the State of Alabama, but especially homes located in Calhoun, Clay, Cleburne, Colbert, Coosa, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Shelby and Talladega counties may have elevated levels of radon; and

WHEREAS, homes in these counties may have elevated levels of radon even if other homes located in their neighborhood do not; and

WHEREAS, testing for radon is simple and inexpensive; and

WHEREAS, identified radon problems can be fixed; and

WHEREAS, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Alabama Department of Public Health, in association with the United States Environmental Protection Agency, are supporting efforts to encourage Americans to test their homes for radon, have elevated levels of radon reduced and have new homes built with radon-resistant features:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim January 2008, as National Radon Action Month in the State of Alabama.
